Opes for the Future

An almanac of Midwest practicality, plain-spoken wisdom, and musings from a Midwest millennial for these impractical times

Greens make you green

2026-07-19 Headlines

Nothing says “healthy lifestyle” quite like getting sick from vegetables. It’s an irony of the modern age, although technically, eating this lettuce can lead to significant weight loss despite how little you’ll be moving (from the toilet).

Thermostat Wisdom

2026-07-17 My Ope-Pinion

When your power company recommends people set their thermostat to 78, they’re asking nicely. Warm indoors and electricity is better than hot indoors and no electricity.

Really Flocking Invasive

2026-07-16 My Ope-Pinion

There’s a real difference between the security that a locked door provides and a shadow that follows you from your driveway to the grocery store. We should be able to go about our day without being ‘processed and logged’ by the cities we live in or visit. Besides the constant surveillance, it doesn’t sit right with me that our tax dollars are being spent to create the prison warden that watches every street we turn onto and we all know they’re recording way more than license plates.

Solar, good clean fun!

2026-07-15 My Ope-Pinion

Having solar panels is like growing your own tomatoes. You know the dirt, you’re not paying a middleman to put a sticker on it, and harvesting gives you a sense of accomplishment. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of knowing your house is running on clean energy with a fixed-price instead of someone else’s profit margin.

Non-Profit

2026-07-13 My Ope-Pinion

I found your non-profit all by myself and donated because I agreed with your cause. I didn’t intend you to use my donation on envelopes and stamps asking me for more money, I’ve already got kids doing that.

I found you once and I’ll find you again when I’m ready to donate. Until then, go fight the good fight and stop adding to my mail pile!

Squirrels

2026-07-12 My Ope-Pinion

Squirrels are just rats with better PR. The fluffy tail is working overtime. They’re still rodents and will destroy your garden because they can’t remember if they planted an acorn under your recently-germinated vegetables.

Unsubscribe

2026-07-11 My Ope-Pinion

I went 40 years of my life without ever buying something from your website. Now, I bought one thing and it will probably be another 40 years before I need something else. It does not mean that I want to receive 2 emails a day from you for the rest of my life.
